Matterhorn Challenge 2013 for the Haven

It's time to go. Hopefully by the time you read this we will be at or nearly at the top.

Matterhorn Challenge: In August, Andrew Bentley, Kevin Bespolka, Tim Dunger, Will Hellier, Malcolm Le May, Tim Wheeler and John Woodman are climbing the Matterhorn to raise money for the breast cancer charity, "The Haven". The combined age of the group is over 350 years so it is far from an average Matterhorn team. This will be the most extreme challenge any of us have ever done. The Matterhorn has been described as "the most difficult climb that an ordinary person can do" - and we are all very ordinary people! Much of the ascent is rock and ice climbing, of which we have very limited experience. It is a very steep and long climb requiring considerable stamina across very exposed terrain at high altitude. We are attempting the Hornli ridge which rises 3000ft straight up. It is narrow, steep with vertical drops to each side. It must be climbed quickly before the afternoon weather breaks so climbing ususally starts at 4am in the dark. It will be a massive physical and emotional challenge for all of us.
